Artist's Comments

:iconsylverkitsune:'s cat, Amadues >:3

Because he's awesome and has funky teeth.

This was a huge relief from my giant project that I'm working on. And it was fun.

I've improved a shit ton, haven't I? I know I'm nowhere near perfect as an artist, but looking back at the pictures I used to make... Yeah, I've improved :D

Sorry about the lack of background, I was going to make something fun in Illustrator but apparently it decided to explode on me.

I'm disappointed in the ears but ehhh

EDIT: Changed background color, fixed a couple of scratchy lines

Critiques

I like its cute wittle face. :aww: His nose is so cute, I just wanna.. kiss it. And what an adorable underbite.

The body is well proportioned, but the perspective on the back legs is a bit wonky and different from the front of the cat. Like, you can see some of the chest in the front, so you should be able to see that raised back leg at more of a 3/4 view at least. Right now you have a side view going on on that leg. Also, is his leg lifted, or is he just posing with that leg stepped back? If his leg is lifted, his paw shouldn't be the same shape as the paws that are touching the ground. Like so: [link] Now, if his leg is just stepping back, we should be able to see the front of that paw more, like you did with the other paws.

You lineart is very clean. :) Gotta admire that.. it's not easy. However, I think it could be improved if you weighted your lines a bit.. I'm not sure how that's done in Illustrator (never could figure that program out), but there is surely a way. Making your lines go from thick to thin in certain areas can create a much richer, more interesting look. Now, just where to make the lines thicker and where to make them thinner, I'm not sure.. I don't know what the guidelines are for using it on animal drawings and it just comes naturally to me.. hmm..
Well, this tutorial provides a good example of what I am talking about here: [link] The thickness of the line really does add an interesting touch.

As for shading, I'll be quite honest, I can't figure out where your light source is coming from. Remember to keep it in mind when you are shading so it remains consistent. Is it above him? in front of him? I'm not sure. It looks more like it's in front of him to me, because you have shadows towards the top of his head and back. Now if that is where the light source is coming from, then it would help to have a few highlights where the light is closest, like his face, for example. Also, closer to the light, the shadows should be darker to create more contrast. I think it would definitely help to use a wider range of values, both in shadows and highlights. It's more work, but in the end it is worth it when you create a believable form. When it comes to drawing cats, you have a nice advantage 'cause you are around them so much. :P In fact, looking at your gallery, your photos would be really good references to study if you want to improve on your shading. Like these! [link] [link] [link] Now, doing value studies sucks and I hate it.. but it really does pay off. :]

Now to finish this delicious critique sandwich, I love the body language in the tail. It gives him lots of character. I also love his thick haunches.. I have a thing for kitty haunches, you see. I also like the way you did his paws all stylized-- i especially like the one on the bottom left. That's my favorite, haha. Once again, his face is adorable.. he looks like an awesome little floofer :3

for some reason I'm picturing the cat with a high-pitched, annoying laugh though. I'm not sure why.
